Embracing Linguistic Advantages with English and Chinese Language as Second Languages
In today's age of globalisation, there is no question about the importance of learning languages, especially among young learners. Being multilingual is yet another skill that would provide your kids with a competitive edge in the future. So what are the languages that are taught at BBS?
BBS, an authorised Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) centre, offers English and Chinese as second languages for Primary, Secondary, and Junior College (JC) students, in accordance with the Cambridge curriculum. There is no requirement for applying students to have prior experience in English or Chinese.
Why English and Chinese?
Being the most widely spoken language globally as of 2020, English has historically been the world's international language, becoming a necessary language to master in today's world. At BBS, the Cambridge English programme teaches students to develop the skills needed to be confident and effective communicators, as English is the language of instruction at the top universities in the world.
In an increasingly competitive world, to be bilingual is not enough. Hence, in addition to English, we also offer Chinese as a second language for students looking to optimise their linguistic skills to stand out in the future competitive workforce.
Adding a Chinese language ability into your children's skill set is not without a good reason. Over the last decade or so, China has undeniably grown to be a global power. The rise of China's influence in the global economy is predicted to continue within the foreseeable future. As a result, there is a rise in demand for people who are fluent in Chinese. Chinese has become an important language to learn for those looking for a competitive edge.
The second most widely spoken language globally, the Chinese and Chinese cultures are historically rich and important to us here in BBS.
Being one of the nation's leading SPK schools with Chinese heritage, we believe in preserving our culture, and language is a vital part of it. The Chinese language is a vessel for Chinese history, and it is important to us that our students understand our culture's history and values.
In BBS, learning Chinese is not strictly about looking into the future but is also about drawing inspiration from the historical culture's past.
How are the programmes taught?
The Cambridge curriculum is designed to encourage active learning among students, which entails developing students' thinking skills and stimulating intellectual engagement and responding to various information, media, and texts.
Hence, the Cambridge language programmes are designed to aid students in improving these skills. Through a combination of reading, writing, listening, and speaking, students would develop the communication skills needed to confidently and effectively communicate their ideas.
